We Just Spent 4 Days at the Dongguan Machine Tool Show — Here's What Buyers Are Actually Asking About

Posted on November 3, 2026 by Judy, VIFAR Export Team

Last week, our team was on the ground at CMES Dongguan International Machine Tool Exhibition (Oct 29 – Nov 1, Hall 3, Booth 3A66). Four days, hundreds of conversations, and a lot of fluorescent light demos on loop.

If you've never been to CMES, it's one of the biggest machine tool shows in southern China — basically where the whole CNC and automation supply chain walks in. As a manufacturer of machine work lamps, signal tower lights, and safety components, we go every year not just to sell, but to listen.

So this time, we took notes. Here are the three questions buyers kept asking us — and what they tell us about where the industry is heading.

1. "Can you make this with our logo?" — OEM demand is not a trend, it's the default

We expected some private-label requests. We did not expect nearly half the booth conversations to start with "do you do OEM?"

Small-to-mid machine builders in particular are tired of reselling generic lights with no brand identity. They want:

  • Their own logo laser-engraved on the lamp body
  • Custom cable lengths and connectors (M12, flying leads, etc.)
  • Specific voltage ranges (24V DC is standard, but 110–240V AC requests were up this year)
  • Packaging that matches their own brand

What we learned: if your lighting supplier treats OEM as a "special project" with a 5,000-piece MOQ, you're going to lose small-batch orders. Our factory in Shenzhen has been adjusting precisely for this — lower OEM MOQs, faster sampling, more flexible bracket options.

2. "Is your safety light curtain CE-certified to IEC 61496?" — safety is non-negotiable

Anyone importing machine components into Europe already knows this, but this year the scrutiny got sharper. Buyers — especially those shipping to Germany, Italy, and Turkey — walked in holding our datasheet and asked:

  • Type 2 or Type 4?
  • What's the resolution (14mm fingers / 30mm hands / 70mm bodies)?
  • Do you have the actual test report from a notified body, not just a declaration?
  • Can the light curtain work with our existing safety relay?

We get it. A cheap uncertified sensor that causes a line shutdown is not a saving. We walked every serious buyer through our Type 4, SIL2-rated curtains and the IEC 61496 paperwork on the spot.

Blogger's note: if you're sourcing safety components from China for the first time, ask for the test report before asking for the price. The price is meaningless without the certificate.

3. "Show me the work lamp that doesn't die after 6 months."

This one made us smile. Everybody in the industry knows the pain point: budget machine lamps that flicker, yellow out, or get fried by coolant splash within half a year.

The F9 / F9E / F9SL series on our booth drew the longest lines. Why? Buyers wanted to touch three things:

  • The aluminum extrusion housing (heat dissipation = lifespan)
  • The silicone seal around the lens (IP65 / IP67 against coolant and chips)
  • The cable strain relief — usually the first failure point

One integrator from Turkey told us he switches machines every 18 months and is sick of replacing lights in between. He walked away with samples.

What we're shipping back to the factory

A show like CMES isn't really about how many cards you collect. It's about the gap between what we think buyers want and what they actually ask for at 4 PM on a Thursday.

This year's takeaways for the next 12 months:

  1. Lower OEM MOQs on signal tower lights — more SKUs, smaller batches
  2. More integrated solutions — work lamp + andon light + safety curtain as one package, one POC
  3. Faster safety documentation — pre-packaged CE / IEC 61496 dossiers so integrators don't wait two weeks
  4. Keep building the 7,000 m² Shenzhen factory — because when buyers ask "are you actually the factory?", we want to say "yes, come visit."

If we didn't get to talk

We're back in the office now. If you saw us at Booth 3A66 and want to pick up where we left off — or if you're reading this later and just want a quote, a datasheet, or a sample — drop us a line.
